Friday, "the Mr." took a couple clients river fishing for Dolly Varden Trout. They enjoyed the fall fishing, and the beauty of the Alaskan countryside. Now starting mid-day, to catch the warmest temperatures, it seems quite "cushy" and manageable.
It's time to start "defying the weather", if I want to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
How easy it is to talk myself into doing something inside, even when it's sunny and beautiful. It takes an extra step or two to layer up. At first the cold screams at you to change your mind. But, defying it all, pays off big, in a short amount of time.
The metabolism cranks up, internal heater kicks in, and the result is comfort. Keeping the ears and hands toasty is the key, as well as wind-covering, especially when on the Spit Trail.
Saturday, it was 'a whippin' out there, with high tide whitecaps on the east side of the Spit, which is a unique situation. The constant wind intensified as the walk progressed.
I tried to imagine what it must be like to live in one of the homes, located on the beach, where waves lapped at their foundations.
Gulls soared with the wind gusts, following one another above the trail. Obviously, they were enjoying the challenge of a good wind, and seemed to be out for some group fun.

Last night, we attended the Homer wedding reception of G.I. Joe and his bride. They have almost been married a month now, having just recently returned from the east coast.
They are house-sitting this winter for some people in town.
We wish them all the best as they begin their lives together!
One of the anticipated advantage to cooler weather hiking is the fact that the big furry things decide to hunker down and sleep for the winter. Well, we haven't hit that season yet, as was evident in an article in the Anchorage Daily News today. This Anchorage suburb resident ended up shooting a grizzly bear only 22' from his front door!But not so fast....we don't escape bear activity down our way.
In my friend Alana's blog, she describes the black bear that returns to her front porch.
With the weather soon turning colder still, the hope is that they'll get the signal that it's time for the big den nap.

Thanx 4 the kick in the pants about making the most of the daylight (oh, that's not what you meant? well, I got it anyway!)...it's drizzly & dreary today in Chi-town. I'll go bundle up...
