East of Homer it's burning. These last few weeks of incredibly beautiful weather have shown their dark side: fire danger. A power line was downed on Tues., in the warm and windy conditions. Things caught fire quickly. Early containment looked probable, but surprisingly the blazes continued on, quickly doubling by Wed. morning. Most early destruction was in the State Park system, but now it is threatening over 40 homes in the area. One structure has reportedly been lost. The road has been closed at mile 16, with temporary Red Cross Shelters set up for those who have been evacuated, or unable to get to their homes. Smokey skies are blanketing the Bay, and the stinging smell of smoke is in the air. Predictions are that the fire's size will exceed 1,000 by today. Our hearts are with with our friends out East, and our prayers go up for them.
